To reduce a child getting bored (or especially the parent too), allow a story book to be customized over and over again in order to stimulate a child's imagination. The Book would consist of set number of pages and each page would have the ability to have a different story made based on velcro attachments and accompanying velcro story elements. Each book would be the same as far as page #1 would have the format of, for example, "There once was a _______________ who had a _____________". The parent or child could then velcro in whatever they wanted to to each blank to create their story. It could be something the parent and child could do together or the child could do on their own to read themselves.
