Require all gun manufacturers to insert a microchip into the weapons they manufacture that would do one of several things. First and foremost, it would allow tracking of all firearms, registered or not. Also, if so designed, this system would allow officers performing a traffic stop, or other duty, to carry a scanning system, whether located in their unit, or on their person, to determine if a vehicle that has been stopped for a traffic violation, or the like, has a weapon concealed. This would then compell the officer to switch to a different protocol in this type of situation. This is a viable and reasonable idea, in as much as it would save countless law enforcement and civilian lives by alearting officers to the presence of a firearm. This would not render the person in possession of the weapon and automatic criminal on a wanted list, but would simply allow the officer a larger degree of safety during a potentially volitile situation. There is no difference to owning a cell phone or a GPS system. If you own one, you can be tracked. However, the huge difference here is that they are not weapons! This is a viable and invaluable possible tool for any and all law enforcement, and the possibilities are limitless. We register our cars, we register ourselves with the DMV, we are all trackable, unless we do not want to be. More often than not, a person that is fleeing from the law has a firearm. This is just one more way to prevent senseless waste of lives. If you are not in trouble with the law, then there is no problem carrying a gun with a microchip. If however, one should tamper with the firearm to try and remove the chip, it would render the firearm useless. No different from any other device that serves this type of purpose such as a warranty fault. Again, this is an idea that is limitless.
I am a self employed equine instructor with vast experience in K9 and equine search and rescue. I have some background in law enforcement, but oddly enough, do not own a firearm. I am the founder of a mounted search and rescue organization that utilizes dogs and horses to help locate lost victims. It is an area that is relatively new to the SAR genre. There was a need for this type of service. After 911, it naturally just came into reality. Firearms are not one of my interests, but I do have a son-in-law that is a law enforcement officer, and after passing a state trooper on the highway while he was making a traffic stop, the idea just hit me.
