With credit to Robert Reich, the former Secretary of Labor and currently Professor at Berkley - the idea is that we need to consider affirmative-action based on income as we do based on race. His reasons were many but the ones that linger are if you attack income as a condition, you help people of all races, thus dismantling the wedge created on this issue (no pitting of black vs. white) because it helps both and more. Another reason - economic diversity on educational campuses. This goes back to that divide again - divides exacerbated by fears and ignorance. It goes both ways; for rich kids to be around poor kids and poor kids to be around the rich ones. We gain understanding, insight and aha! new ideas when we broaden our horizons. I know, some of you will think, what next, affirmative-action for pet lovers? No, not quite. Poverty and the gap between the rich and poor is the most significant domestic issue we face. Think about it. The consequences of Global Warming start to play out and flooding and draught ensue - who's thirsty, who’s drowning? Whose better prepared, more often than not, for natural disasters (one word: Katrina). Income Based Affirmative-Action. VOTE Please.
