There was sad news out of literary circles today. A very talented author named David Foster Wallace had reportedly killed himself in his home. He was, some may say, to be compared with the best of them. His works were scathing indictments of media and entertainment as well as capitalism and greed, woven with a vocabulary and mastery of words to impress Shakespeare. In "Infinite Jest" published over 10 years ago, he wrote of corporate sponsorship and for example, how years would ultimately be for sale...can't you see 2009 the year of Hormel? Now because of Mr. Wallace's disdain for entertainment as a proxy for happiness, it is difficult to suggest that Hollywood profit from his work. And so for very selfish reasons - because I would love to see Infinite Jest - or some parts of it represented in film - I'd like to see a movie version, though with profits going to film schools and writer's workshops which subsidize under-funded students. If you have not read the book, check it out (http://www.amazon.com/Infinite-Jest-David-Foster-Wallace/dp/0316066524/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221534808&sr=8-1). It's an amazingly prescient look into the future (now) of business, politics and culture. And if you have read it, feel free to edit this idea and make this a better tribute to a writer of distinct genius.
This was one of my first serious fiction reads as an impressionable college student. I immediately fell in love with Wallace, so be sure to incorporate that bias in any votes you cast. I also like tennis, and Wallace was a junior tennis star, amazed by the art and physics of the sport, incorporating it into his writing frequently throughout his career.
