While racism may not be the institutionalized, overt problem that it once was, I believe that it still persists in the subconscious, deeply rooted stereotypes held by most Americans We react and judge on appearances without (at least for some) even knowing that we are doing it. And I don't think that's limited to any particular race--I think that's a human condition.

And it is much easier to hold on to those stereotypes and leave them unchallenged when you are thinking of a race or social group in an aggregate, instead of on an individual level. The unfortunate truth is that, in many of the less diverse areas of this country where one race predominates, there are not as many opportunities to get to know individuals from different backgrounds.

I once read an article about a program designed to open up minds and increase tolerance for different religious faiths. A group of 10 people or so from varied religious backgrounds would be formed, and they'd come together monthly to eat dinner and discuss various religious topics. It was highly effective in helping those individuals learn respect one another's faiths.

Why not create a similar organization that would foster similar groups, but with varied racial/social backgrounds rather than faith? It would give people an opportunity to break bread together and get to know each other as PEOPLE, not as hispanic people, black people, white people, etc.. I even think there is a wide gap (and a host of associated prejudices) between different socio-economic classes within any race. Anytime you bridge gaps between people (on an individual level), it can't help but be good for society as a whole. I made this idea editable by my partners. Please add your thoughts!!!
