I'm a forty-one year old, husband of fourteen years and father of two boys. I am an apprentice woodworker and volunteer firefighter and EMT.
I am researching the invention process and trying to move ahead with ideas. This idea stuff, if taken to its rightful end, is not for the faint of heart.

Firstly, I want to thank all my partners for supporting this idea. I really want to make this happen and am coming back here to allow community edits to this idea and to add some additional thinking.
What would happen if we took one day from every month to support "Media Free Day," a day when cell phones, email, PDA's, televisions, movies, browsing ideas on IDEASTOX, listened to our iPods, playing video games...were all replaced by walks in the park, ball games, naps, swimming, hiking, running, blue skies under a shady tree, cooking, talking, sharing yourself with someone else, spending time with your parents/your kids/your pets/your friends, sitting and staring at the clouds go by.
Media Free Day would be a day of respite for everyone. No work, no content, no electronic interaction. Make a decision and commitment in advance to spend time with people you love/like. Take no calls from anyone because you are present - really present - with the only people you want to hear from. Do no work because no one else is and you could use a day of vacation - real vacation because you can't turn on your laptop.
What would happen? Here's my guess...
It would be good for our collective soul. It may also be good for our planet. I bet it would also be great for our intimate relationships.
What if we started with one day. We just picked a day. We wrote up an explanation of the idea and we sent it to everyone we know. And we staged an experimental boycott of media.
We could pull this off on our own.
How about Friday January 23, 2009? It's far enough off that we could mount a major grass-roots people's marketing campaign. We'll have a new president, so that excitememt/anticipation will be over. We'll be so saturated by the holidays and the elections being over, we will welcome a Media Free Day.
IDEASTOX will you help us out by committing to go dark, as you did for 9/11?
I want to publish ideas that chage our culture. I am interested in you if you have an idea of this sort and if you want to help market and sell ideas that make society better, not necessarily more profitable.
