Let's try to stop using labels to describe schools. Progressive, Developmental, Traditional, Conservative...these labels, applied to a multi-faceted education program, particularly at the lower grade levels of preschools, elementary and middle schools are misleading and impossible to decipher. Example, Parent A describes preschool A as progressive because there is an eclectic mix of families at the school (many religions, nationalities, sexual orientations etc...). However, the school is one which does not allow preschoolers to run in the playground at recess. Parent B describes elementary school B as traditional, because they wear uniforms. Still, kindergarteners frolic during free unstructured exploration time in the classroom, on a daily basis. Labels on schools which offer multi-faceted experiences are misleading and dangerous in the evaluation of school choices for young people. Parents, take the time to deconstruct these labels, and see for yourselves. And oh, political labels, same idea.
Frustrated by the misuse of labels for the sake of efficient conversation and understanding, when in effect, they deplete more time and convey less comprehension than would a more complex description.
