It struck me that Soccer Moms have suddenly been replaced by Hockey Moms in terms of their political influence thanks to the new national prominence of Sarah Palin. I suggest here a resurgence of the former, the mom's who are impressed by the multi-tasking abilities of America's new superstar, but are opposed to the policies of right-wing Americans who claim to strive for smaller government, then insert that down-sized vision into the homes of Americans by telling them who they can marry, how they should relinquish control of their bodies, and what weapons crazy neighbors have the right to possess. Soccer Moms, you are the voice of reason - the reason that says most women will not vote for a woman because she is a woman. Rather, she votes based upon what she believes. You are the voice that says a mother of 10 may decide to run for office some day - and the freedoms afforded by our American democracy allow her to do so. How she does it is her choice. Ironic right? Soccer Moms need a big goal here in the 2nd half - even if it feels like overtime. We need to show the hockey moms that no more blood needs to be spilled and that "Energy Independence" (can you hear it rolling off of Frank Luntz's lips?) does not equal policies for a sustained earth. Soccer moms and hockey moms, can we find common ground in time to avoid an all out culture war? Work or not, you want the best for your kids...you want them to have a planet to enjoy, safe streets on which to play, loving families to support their choices, and an independent spirit to pursue their dreams. Let's agree on that.
