I was walking along my street today with my daughter, and saw a car approaching from a long distance away. By the time I got all the way over, the car passed me going about 70 (the speed limit is 25)
Now, this is just unacceptable. There is no way that idiot can stop his car if a child runs out into the street. And what if he hits a pot hole? There goes my house!
My idea is for a speed regulator that could be installed on cars. It would get the speed limit information from a database based on your location (via GPS). Then, it would simply not let you go over the posted speed limit.
It would have an override button so that you could turn it off, either in an emergency or for some other reason, so you could go above the speed limit. But when you click the override, it automatically notifies the police. Or, it could simply record the minutes on and the minutes off and report that data to the insurance comapny on a regular basis so your premiums could be adjusted accordingly.
This could be a safety feature on new cars, or also required on all cars. Or, it could simply be a device that insurance companies love, and when you install it, they give you an initial discount on your auto insurance (similar to defensive driving). I mean, for those of us that drive the speed limit (usually), why not?
