For the first time, a city (Chicago) decided to tax bottled water (2008). Dubbed an eco-sin tax, the city makes 5 cents on every bottle of water sold.
I like this tax and suggest it should be taxed at the federal level as well as the local level for I believe it is a real disincentive to purchase bottles of water when with a bit of planning, they can be avoided almost entirely.
Additionally, this is a tax which disproportionately effects those who can afford bottled water in the first place, usually not people living pay check to pay check. The issue there is more of running water.
The proceeds from the bottled water tax could be used to fund a national filtered water program - i think there are few discussed here on IDEASTOX - as well as pay down the trillion dollars of debt we are incurring in our current financial fiasco.
A Federal Bottled Water Tax is a good idea, no? If you disagree, please explain why.
This came up in a discussion with my children tonight. We were discussing the various ballot initiatives in an upcoming election and the concept of a tax arose. We hypothesized a bottled water tax only to learn that Chicago had embraced one.
