How many times have you sat down and read the privacy policy a company sends you? Zero times? Once? Who cares? Well perhaps you should care if the company isn't following the industry standard, but otherwise, it's pretty difficult to discern one privacy policy from the next.
I receive one of these at least every month from a company I do business with (credit cards, etc.) They are multiple pages of crap. Seriously. I don't care. I obviously know you are protecting my data. Please. Don't tell me about it every month unless there is a change and you can notify me of that change in the normal course of our communications - e.g. a bill. Otherwise, what a waste!
Now, I know that we receive these because of legal reasons. But can't they send me a URL on all my bills that says "Go here to see our privacy policy". Then, they cover their asses and they save paper.
Perhaps we need to mandate a simplified 1-page privacy policy document for all companies that have one, with a deviation score in terms of dangerm with a privacy policy watch-dog group to alert consumers to a privacy policy which deviates from the norm. Certainly something to consider.
And lets also change the interval they need to send this out. It seems like it is roughly 1 year. Send it out every 3 years. Seriously. Do we need to know every year? Unless something changes, I don't care. And to be honest, I don't care if it changes...Unless of course, you are selling my information :)
